The certainty of analog activation, the extension of the protection to the delicate cervical area, the comfort ensured by the low weight and the versatility of use, define a world reference product for safety on two wheels.
AIR DPS is the result of a design and research process started in 1998 and developed by the Safety Lab, the laboratory that works on DPS technology and which has made SPIDI a leading brand in motorcycle apparel.
Precision and security are guaranteed by:
The certainty of analog activation: activation and inflation through the Kevlar cable connected to the motorcycle, which guarantees the safe and sure activation of the airbag in any crash with separation from the vehicle;
26 liters of air protection: 26 liters of air protection: in the case of triggering the system, 3.8 meters of air chamber deploy around the motorcyclist, protecting the back, hips, chest and, in particular, the cervical area. More air, more thickness, more protected areas.
No interference from external elements that may limit its effectiveness (magnetic fields, radio waves, battery decay, rain, cold, sand): the mechanical system requires no recharging or maintenance; therefore you can start with your own vehicle at any time without any concern.
The AIR DPS guarantees in the meantime maximum safety and comfort thanks to its light weight: the DPS system weights only 1.070 kg.
It can be worn over any jacket, in any season, without the need to multiply seasonal purchases.
Pietro Zanetti, head of Safety Lab, SPIDI R&D department, said about the achievement of this milestone: "Since 1998 SPIDI Safety Lab has been working to reduce weight and activation times of the AIR DPS system and the result is a new product with performances exceeding expectations: weight reduction by 28.6%, reduction of activation times and a complete reconfiguration of ergonomics and geometries. We are confident of the effectiveness and flexibility of such light and efficient product. For us, this really represents a concrete step forward in the evolution of technical motorcycle clothing.
In the light of the results collected in MotoGP, where the electronic version of the AIR DPS system is currently in use, it is clear to us that the analogue system is more effective for the non-professional user as no alternative system can guarantee the same certainty of activation in the most different crash dynamics.
A consumer centric product, that is dedicated to any type of motorcyclist, must in fact have different characteristics from the professional one, used on the track, in a controlled context and with a high level of intervention by specialized assistance personnel. The experience deriving from the use of the electronic version of AIR DPS in MotoGP is however crucial in order to continue the development of the road AIR DPS system."
L'evoluzione tecnologica
The research on the AIR DPS SPIDI system began in 1998, starting with the first contacts between Italian and Japanese technicians.
1999 - The collaboration initially results in a product called DPS 01: a vest to be worn over the usual motorcycle jacket, inside which, a system derived from automotive airbags is integrated. This product has set the basis for future developments.
2002 - The first real gear with an integrated pneumatic system is created: it is called DPS 02 and it is a waterproof jacket with a typically touring fit.
2003 - The range is quickly renewed with a lighter jacket with a sportier vocation, the DPS 03.
2005 - The DPP (Pneumatic Protection Device), a revolutionary prototype of Neck DPS meant for racing suits, is presented at the EICMA Milan show.
2009 - After four years of development, SPIDI is ready to launch the new Neck DPS system: more compact, lighter and more efficient than the previous one, equipped with a double inflation chamber for total protection of the cervical area. It is the first suit in the world to go on the market with an integrated airbag system: T2 Neck DPS.
2016 - The FULL DPS VEST is launched, an evolution of AIR DPS technology.
2017 - AIR DPS technology is introduced in MotoGP
2019 - The performance of the system is further increased with the AIR DPS vest certified FB EN 1621-4: 2013 Liv. 1.
