The Stories of Nico - Angel Nieto, el Cabron who charged headlong
The Jerez circuit is dedicated to Nieto, a leading figure in Spanish motorcycling. Born in 1947, he is the rider with the most titles on different motorcycles: Derbi, Kreidler, Bultaco, Minarelli, and Garelli between 1969 and 1984.
What a story: at ten years old, he was already working as a workshop assistant, at 16 he was hired by Derbi, and a year later he made his debut in the home GP with an official 50. He once raced in 500 at Jarama with a Honda: King Juan Carlos came to see him, and Nico was there too.
That nickname they gave him? Like all champions, Angel Nieto was very ambitious, but also aggressive, shrewd, “capable of anything,” as Pier Paolo Bianchi, his rival and teammate, points out.
Loris Reggiani, who was the Spaniard's very young number 2 on Minarelli, describes him as “a phenomenon of coolness and calculation.” For Michele Verrini, who was his sporting director, he was “clever and knew how to get things done.” Finally, Angel was on the same wavelength as Nico Cereghini: after retiring, he became the technical commentator for TVE, and they often worked side by side.
