Suzuki DR-Z4S: the return of a legend
The new DR-Z4S is a modern bike that remains true to its original philosophy, combining ease of use with impressive performance. Here's everything you need to know.
The technical basis of the DR-Z4S is founded on a double-beam steel frame, combined with a rear subframe and aluminum swingarm, a choice aimed at keeping weight down without sacrificing strength. The result is remarkable: the scales tip at just 151 kg ready to ride, including a full 8.7-liter fuel tank.
Engine: updated and ready for anything
The beating heart of the bike is the 398 cm³ single-cylinder engine, now updated to comply with the strict Euro 5+ standards. Performance is calibrated to ensure fun and usability:
Power: 38 hp at 8,000 rpm
Torque: 37 Nm at 6,500 rpm
The gearbox remains a classic 5-speed, faithful to the Dual Sport setup that favors mechanical simplicity and reliability.
True Enduro suspension
To fully enjoy off-road riding, the suspension is crucial, and Suzuki has spared no expense, relying on Kayaba (KYB):
Front: 46 mm fork (embellished with an anodized finish on the fork leg) and 280 mm of travel.
Rear: Adjustable monoshock with an impressive 296 mm of travel.
These figures bring the DR-Z4S dangerously close to a specialist enduro bike, ensuring excellent shock absorption.
Ergonomics and seat height
Long-travel suspension inevitably means a high seat. The seat is 920 mm from the ground, a value that might seem daunting on paper. However, thanks to a very narrow frame and overall structure, the bike allows almost anyone to touch the ground with confidence (in the video, the 1.80 m tall tester easily touches the ground with both feet).
Electronics: technology at the service of the rider
Despite its “hard and pure” soul, the new DR-Z4S also appeals to beginners or those seeking greater safety, thanks to a complete electronic package that can be managed from the dashboard and handlebar controls:
3 engine maps
Traction Control: adjustable to 3 levels and can be disabled.
ABS: manageable and can be disabled for off-road riding.
