Nico's stories: here are the two motorbikes that exploded my passion
They were two myths of the sixties and I, as a 15-year-old, didn't even know it: the Ducati 175 Sport and the Triumph Bonneville 650 were a real turning point for me. With those I went from pure contemplation to the triumph of sensoriality. I rode them. Even though I wasn't old enough...
Those were other times, it must be said, the traffic and safety culture was next to zero. Two very understanding neighbours, two lucky motorcyclists who owned these marvels, seeing me so full of enthusiasm invited me to take them for a ride. Here are the feelings and emotions: not for the sake of boasting, but with a precise intent: to bring passion back to centre stage.
Here are the emotions I felt. Those few hundred metres I rode all alone at the wheel of the two racing cars changed me. The handlebars in my hands, that engine between my legs, the vibrations and the music of the exhaust in my ears. The power of those sensations is something that every motorcyclist knows well, but few young people today are lucky enough to experience.
How to arouse the curiosity of the youngest and lead them towards motorbikes? By creating opportunities to see and feel motorbikes up close, as happens at Eicma and on a few other occasions. And then by passing on the memory of their best experiences. The motorbike is beautiful, it is healthy, it should be told for what it is, without necessarily seeking sensationalism and extreme challenge.
