Moto Guzzi, Greg Lynn reveals the new Mandello: where heritage meets the future
The American architect behind the transformation of Moto Guzzi's historic factory explains the vision behind the project
It's not just a factory, and it's certainly more than a museum. The new home of Moto Guzzi in Mandello del Lario is something different: a place where past and future coexist, technology meets tradition, and motorcycle enthusiasts can discover the beating heart of one of the world's most iconic motorcycle brands.
The man behind this transformation is Greg Lynn, the American architect responsible for the project, who also happens to be a passionate motorcyclist. "As a kid, I was constantly asking my parents for a motorcycle. I raced motocross as a teenager, and I've always loved anything that goes fast," he recalls. A passion that led him to buy a Moto Guzzi Audace in Los Angeles just weeks after his first visit to Mandello.
At the heart of the project lies a clear ambition: opening Moto Guzzi to the world without losing its identity. "The vision was really to create an experience for both passionate Moto Guzzi owners and people who were just discovering the brand," Lynn explains.
This philosophy has shaped the entire complex, bringing together the museum, production facilities and public spaces. Large glass surfaces and dedicated viewing areas allow visitors to see how the motorcycles are actually made.
But the transformation goes far beyond architecture. The factory has been completely reorganised with automated conveyor systems and robots that transport motorcycles between production stations, reducing manual handling and improving efficiency.
The architectural approach is equally distinctive, creating a dialogue between century-old buildings and contemporary industrial structures, while carefully framing the spectacular mountain landscape surrounding Mandello.
"Moto Guzzi has a strong legacy, but it's a legacy of being an innovator," Lynn points out.
And perhaps that is the best way to describe the new Mandello: a place that celebrates its roots while embracing the future of motorcycle manufacturing.
