Mario Lega, the SIP worker who became World Champion

Mario Lega, the SIP worker who became World Champion

He worked at SIP, which later became Telecom: between vacations, leave, and a couple of periods of unpaid leave, Mario (born in 1949) managed to race and work at the same time, until he retired. He started in 1977 with a Yamaha and scored his first points in Venezuela, then Paolo Pileri got injured and he was called to replace him at Morbidelli for four races. But he took the lead in the world championship, so how could they leave him at home?

He won only one GP, in Abbazia, but he was more consistent than Villa, Uncini, Katayama, Ballington, and company. It was a very balanced season.

A compelling story: Mario reproduces gestures and sounds, taking us back to the track between the guardrails on two-stroke motorcycles. He brings us back to that May 20 in Monza, when he emerged unscathed from the disaster at the big curve, which he reconstructs in detail; he tells of Saarinen, an extraordinary rider, and Pasolini, warm and passionate.

Then Cecotto, Buscherini, Read, Ballington, Grant, Herron, and Ekerold... And legendary figures such as Andrea Ippolito and his Venemotos. A dive into the 1970s with one of its protagonists.
