Domenico Moretti, Artist's Frame: "PC, CAD, Algorithms, Formulas: it's all in here!" - THE INTERVIEW
Once upon a time, people welded pipes by placing them on their own ideas, on experience. Then came machines, computers, simulators. But not everyone agrees. Not everyone is willing to throw their sensibilities away....
Domenico Moretti is someone my friend Onix describes as this: he is Number 1. And Onix understands us. More than me. Since I am a sceptic by nature, one day he took me somewhere and took me to the Grotta del Mago. It is a place outside Livorno, a beautiful view, the wind from the sea.
In the workshop, which is adjacent to the house, Domenico Moretti is waiting for us. Onix makes the introductions, but not in a conventional way. He gives me a tour of the workshop and shows me that bike, the other one, the bare frame on the wheels, the engine barely embedded in another frame, the series of pit bikes, a Guzzi that takes my mind off fate, a Harley that puts me in doubt, a series of Yamahas... without aluminium.
Then, with a wide turn of his index finger, he points to an overview of machines, above all, presses, lathes, welders, jigs. Finally he says: "This is Domenico Moretti, the Number 1" Incidentally, Onix has commissioned two chassis for two replica BMW Paris-Dakar.
Finally Moretti speaks, and tells us the point of view of a chassis maker from another era. His story, his topicality. He has no secrets, because he feels what makes the difference, and we cannot understand it. He tells us about frames and riders, and about a factory that asked him for a frame for a bike that would later have it in boxed aluminium. So what? Hear how things are...
