BMW Electro-assisted Automated Transmission
Andrea Silva, BMW Motorrad Italy communications manager, presents the new ASA automated transmission for smooth, clutchless driving at EICMA
At Moto.it MotoFestival, BMW Motorrad unveils its innovative ASA (Assist Servomechanical Gearbox) automated transmission system for the 1300 cc boxer, a technology that marks a new era for the brand. ‘With ASA,’ explains Andrea Silva, ’we offer motorcyclists an intuitive interface that retains the shift pedal but eliminates the clutch lever, making riding smoother and more natural.’
The technology is based on an electro-assisted gearbox with electronic actuators, which replace the mechanical clutch. This allows gear changes without the use of the clutch pedal, while still retaining manual control, should the rider so desire. ‘The system detects parameters such as acceleration and braking, adapting to the riding style of the rider and ensuring safety even when cornering thanks to integration with ABS and traction control,’ adds Silva.
Already integrated in the 1300 cc boxer engine, ASA is planned for future extensions, as Silva confirms: ‘Once the technology is perfected, we will evaluate integration with other models, as long as it is in line with BMW's riding philosophy’. A step forward that demonstrates how BMW continues to innovate, without forgetting the traditional feeling.
