Whatever Happened to 50cc Mopeds?
There was a time when turning 14 meant one thing above all: finally being able to ride a moped. It was a rite of passage, a symbol of independence, friendship and adventure. But how much has changed since then?
In this Moto.it conversation, three generations of riders share their experiences, from the Piaggio Ciao, Sì and Garelli VIP 4 to the scooters that defined the 1990s and 2000s, including the Malaguti Phantom, Yamaha Aerox, MBK Booster and Gilera Runner.
Between memories of engine tuning, modified exhausts, mixing two-stroke fuel at petrol stations and questionable speed challenges, a picture emerges of an era when a 50cc moped was far more than transportation: it represented a first taste of real freedom.
Today, however, things are very different. Rising purchase costs, insurance, licensing requirements and regulations have made mopeds less accessible to younger riders, while electric bicycles and scooters have become increasingly popular alternatives.
The conversation also touches on safety. While older generations rode machines with relatively basic brakes and tyres, today's riders benefit from modern protective equipment, ABS and technology that was unimaginable decades ago.
Yet one thing remains unchanged: you never forget your first moped. And for some riders, hearing that familiar engine sound and smelling two-stroke fuel again would be worth more than owning a brand-new motorcycle.
