Suzuki DR-Z4SM: the “unicorn” of motards

Suzuki

Medium displacement, featherweight, and lots of electronics for pure fun.

  • Watch now

If we look at the current market, the new Suzuki DR-Z4SM really seems like a “rare unicorn.” Why? Simple: mid-range motards that are fun to ride without emptying your wallet and with reasonable running costs are almost impossible to find these days. Suzuki has decided to fill this gap with a bike that focuses entirely on lightness and rideability. We have analyzed the newcomer in detail.

The heart: old-school single-cylinder, modern technology

Under the superstructure beats a 398 cm³ four-stroke single-cylinder engine. A sincere engine, capable of delivering 38 horsepower at 8,000 rpm, with a maximum torque of 37 Nm at 6,500 rpm. Transmission is handled by a 5-speed gearbox. These figures, combined with the low weight, promise the mix of agility and responsiveness that you look for in a motorcycle in this segment.

Chassis: the goal of lightness

The technical base features a double-beam steel frame, but the real refinement work has been done on the accessory components: thanks to the rear subframe and aluminum swingarm, the DR-Z4SM weighs in at just 154 kg with a full tank of gas (the tank capacity is 8.7 liters).

Unlike its “cousin” the 4S (the Dual version with 21“ and 18” wheels), the SM version boasts a true motard set-up: 17-inch aluminum spoked wheels (with inner tubes), fitted as standard with high-performance Dunlop Sportmax Q5A tires. Braking is provided by an axial-mount system with two-piston calipers and a generous 310 mm front disc.

Suspension and Ergonomics

The suspension is by KYB and is fully adjustable at both the front and rear, a rare feature in this price range.

Fork: 260 mm of travel.

Monoshock: 277 mm of travel with progressive linkage.

Note on seat height: 890 mm. Not exactly low on paper, but thanks to an extremely narrow frame in the central area (the arch of the crotch is very small), even riders who are 1.80 m tall can rest both feet on the ground with confidence.

Electronics: everything you need for cornering

Don't be fooled by its minimalist appearance, there is a lot of technology inside. The DR-Z4SM is equipped with Ride-by-Wire throttle, full LED lighting, and an LCD display. The instrumentation allows you to manage the electronic package, which includes:

3 engine maps (Suzuki Drive Mode Selector).

3-level traction control (can be disabled for more experienced riders).

Manageable ABS: on the SM version, the ABS can be disabled on the rear only.

This ABS configuration is essential for supermotard riding, allowing those who want to have fun (and are capable of doing so) to initiate classic drifts when entering corners while maintaining safety on the front.
