Olympic champion in 2018 in the downhill in Pyeongchang, four downhill World Cups and two World Championship medals, Sofia Goggia is also the record holder of 13 podiums won in a single World Cup season.
Sofia is not only an icon of world skiing, but also a great motorbike enthusiast, and she spoke with enthusiasm and simplicity, sharing anecdotes and revealing details of her life away from the slopes. She explained her deep connection with the world of two wheels, recounting her personal journey, from the fifties she inherited from her brother to her current Ducati.
‘Motorcycles represent freedom, like a bike,’ he explains, ’and having an engine that pushes you around corners is a unique feeling.’
She makes no secret of her support for Italian champion Pecco Bagnaia, of whom she is an avid fan.
Motorcycling and skiing, she says, have more similarities than one might imagine. ‘Curves, speed and trajectories are common aspects between the two sports,’ she explains. He adds that although in skiing there is the component of slope and a constant struggle with instinct to negotiate turns, the dynamics of corner management and the courage to ‘break away’ are similar to those of motorcycling. ‘Even in skiing, especially downhill, you have to have the courage to push to the last and sustain the resulting forces.’
Coming back from a shin injury, Sofia is ready to get back on track and aims to face the new season with the determination that characterises her.
