A season of progress, a return to the podium after two years and the belief that the Bimota project still has plenty of untapped potential. Axel Bassani, speaking to Carlo Baldi for Moto.it at Cremona, gives a positive assessment of his 2026 World Superbike campaign.

"I think this year has gone well. We've returned to the podium and achieved some satisfying results," says the Italian rider, highlighting how Bimota, only in the second year of its project, has established itself as the second-strongest manufacturer behind Ducati.

The KB998 Rimini's improvements have largely come from a better understanding of the bike, significant geometry changes and refinements to its engine and electronics. However, Bassani believes there is still considerable room for improvement, particularly in power delivery and aerodynamics.

He acknowledges Ducati's impressive work and Nicolò Bulega's achievements, while hoping for a more balanced and competitive championship. Looking ahead to 2027, Bassani is confident that technical continuity and an improved working relationship with his team will help him take another step forward.

"Finishing inside the top five is a realistic goal," he says, without ruling out further podium finishes or even a race victory.

And when asked to rate his own season, Bassani gives himself an eight out of ten. A sign of a rider who has grown not only technically, but also mentally, learning to be less critical of himself.
